Filament, uh, Saturday 09/13/2014

One year ago today I posted Friday Filaments (Re-revisited), with the goal of posting them every Friday for a year. Well, I came close. A few were posted late, but, as luck would have it, last week’s was the only one I truly missed. #SoDylan. However, instead of getting down on myself or giving myself a break, I’m going to rededicate myself to posting the weekly links every single Friday for the next year. Finger’s crossed.

Also, I’ll be attempting to live blog during the Saints game tomorrow. Due to a confluence of circumstances, the game will be shown on TV here in Maryland, so I will be offering my observations and pithy comments, as soon as I look up what pithy means.

I'm not wearing that...

I’m not wearing that…

Hopefully it’s a better result than last week, which I’m thankful I did not get to see. In fact, last Sunday was a spectacularly awful sports day. Literally every team I was rooting for lost. Well, I was rooting for Serena.

It’s unofficially the last weekend of summer, which means baseball is entering it’s home stretch, football is getting started (fo’ realz!) and basketball…uh, get out of bed basketball, time to start getting ready. For the rest of us, hopefully it means a long weekend, some barbeque and brews, and enough water to submerge yourself in, at least up to the knees. Preferably deeper, but take what you can get. Boy, that sounded dirty.

I participated in the ALS ice bucket challenge and want to thank all of my friends and all of the people who I’ve never met who did likewise. Despite the best attempts of the trolls this viral phenomenon has raised over $15 million dollars for research into the cure for ALS. I really don’t what causes people to take a big, steaming dump on anything good that others try to do, but I sincerely hope that every person who took the time to complain about other people trying to do a tiny something positive at least put their money where their mouth is and donated (SPOILER ALERT: They didn’t). However, since the whole point of this blog it to not get too negative, I’m not going to dwell on that, but, instead, provide you to the links where you can make a donation to this incredibly worthy cause.

Mini-Filament Wednesday 08/20/2014

Due to some work and family commitments I was unable to post the links this past Friday, but I figure I can still average one per week. You’re getting your money’s worth, right? Anyway, to keep it quick and dirty (I know how you like it), I’m basically just posting everything in all of the open tabs in my browser that I was supposedly saving for last week. We’ll be back with our regularly scheduled Filaments in two days.

Javier Baez was called to the majors this week and Cubs fans were all like…

HAHAHA, IT'S REALLY HAPPENING!!!

HAHAHA, IT’S REALLY HAPPENING!!!

Then, after going 0-5, he hit the game winning home run in the 12th inning for his first MLB hit and Cubs fans were all like…

AAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

AAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Then, after a ho-hum second game (0-4, no strikeouts), Baez went off to the tune of 3-4, including his second and third career homers. And Cubs fans were all like…

WHAT'S HAPPENING?!?!?!?!

WHAT’S HAPPENING?!?!?!?!

This season just got a lot more interesting…

I had a nice “Glory Days” moment this week, playing third base in my work softball league and going 3-4 with 5 RBI. I made all of the plays that I should make with the glove and almost pulled off a couple that I shouldn’t have.

But the real fun came in the final frame. Batting at the top of the inning, our team was down by one run, 7-6. A lead-off hit. Then a double. Then another hit. And another. Tie game with the bases loaded and I was coming to the plate. There were no outs and it was all I could do to stop thinking, “Don’t make the first one.” The pitcher lobbed the ball, I swung and watched the ball sailing over the centerfielder’s head. Too many seconds later, I was standing on third base and we had a 10-7 lead. We tacked on 4 more for a 14-7 lead before heading to the bottom of the inning.

Two quick outs, then a couple of hits and suddenly the opposing team was looking a little more lively. Their next batter swung – a pop-up…right to me. I hate pop-ups, I have a horrible time judging the ball on it’s way up and I’ve let too many fall just over my head in my lifetime. But I had a bead on this one, settling underneath and pushing down the doubt that I had misread the trajectory of the ball and that little voice saying, “It’s the last out, don’t drop it.” A little Soriano-esque hop, then the ball hit my glove and stuck right in the pocket. Game over.

A Few Thoughts on the Tony Dungy Thing

There was a big bruhaha this week over comments Tony Dungy made, that he would not have drafted Michael Sam because of all of the “distractions” that would go with drafting the first openly gay player in major sports history. Sam took the high road, while Dungy attempted to clarify his remarks by saying that Sam deserves a chance to play, but that he (Dungy) would have assessed any distractions of any type before drafting any player. I’m sorry, but this is hogwash and, given Tony Dungy’s reputation, incredibly disappointing. Continue reading

Looking forward to the return of Cubs games, the wife and bug being back in town and some beautiful weather for Artscape in Baltimore this weekend. And, as always, clicking around on the internet.

You may have noticed that the Filaments were not posted last week – I actually had them pretty much ready to go, but a combination of driving and sitting on the beach prevented me from actually pushing the publish button. My bad. However, I’m pushing it twice today, so be sure to go back and check out last week’s 4th of July edition – and bring your headphones, I linked to lots of music.
