Game 4 Recap and Game 5 Preview

Towson TigersMirroring last weekend, the Tigers got off to a slow start in the opening game of their series, eventually falling to Richomond 11-5. Towson hitters struck out 13 times, while their compatriots on the mound only K’d 2 Richmond batters. It’s a trend that will need to change for Towson to find some consistent success, but I’m not sure it’s entirely unexpected. With an new coaching staff and a number of new and young players, a period of adjustment is natural. Hopefully the learning curve is as short as their memories and they can set up a rubber game in the series finale tomorrow. Here’s some quick notes and thoughts before I go attempt a 10 mile run (what the what?!).

Game 4 Preview

Towson TigersTowson starts a weekend series at University of Richmond today at 2 p.m. After an up and (mostly) down opening trip to New Mexico, the Tigers will look to rebound against head coach Matt Tyner’s former team. Tyner should have great familiarity with many of the Spiders’ hitters, so, if they are able to execute, we could see much better pitching performances this weekend. Interestingly, the Towson has a new Friday starter, at least for this week. Here’s the lineup for today’s game.

The Importance of Coaching and Expectations

Towson TigersThings don’t always go the way you expect. For instance, I didn’t expect to be writing about Towson University baseball, much less for free, but here we are.

I came into this knowing nothing about the Towson baseball program. One of the first things I learned was that they made a coaching change after last season, the first in thirty years. New head coach Matt Tyner was a former college star (1980 Player of the Year at the University of Miami after joining the team as a walk-on) and legitimate minor league prospect (31 homers at Class-A in 1981) in the early 1980’s, before an elbow injury cut his career short. His road to Towson was long and winding, from childhood dreams of being President or a major league baseball player, to being drafted by a team he never expected, to a bus crash on a minor league road trip that may have contributed to his career ending injuries.

Towson Tigers Weekend 1 Recap

Towson TigersThe first weekend of Tigers baseball is in the books and it was an up and down few days. Playing at New Mexico State, the Tigers were rained out Friday night, blown up 24-4 (sorry, when you lose by 20 runs you are blown up, not out), then rallied to win the second game on Saturday, 11-6, before dropping the series finale on Sunday, 13-3. Is New Mexico State a high altitude location? Because that’s a lot of offense. (Just checked – at 3,900 feet of elevation New Mexico State, located in Las Cruces, New Mexico, is nearly three quarters of a mile above sea level. So, I’m guessing, yeah, the ball flies there.)

Game 1 Thoughts and Recap (Postponed)

Towson TigersWith the Tigers first games of the season taking place in New Mexico, you would think rainouts would be the least of concerns. Mother Nature scoffs at your preconceived notions.

That’s not all bad, since we’ll hopefully get a doubleheader tomorrow. Plus, the Towson folks on Twitter were kind enough to post tonight’s intended lineup, so here’s my a chance to do a little homework. With the power of the internet, and Towson’s media guide, let’s see what we can learn about the nine (sorry, ten, I forgot college baseball uses the DH) who start the season atop the depth chart.

Back to School (We’re Going Prospecting!)

Towson TigersIn a completely random turn of events, I’ve decided to follow Towson University baseball this year. It started on Twitter with a challenge from Tim Huwe of thezygote50.com. He suggested that, if you’re a baseball fan who likes following prospects, why not take it to the next level? Previous level? The college level.

Pick a team and follow it for a month or two, he said. Ok, I replied.

I picked Towson because it’s pretty close to where I live. I know next to nothing about it’s baseball program. Here’s what I’ve learned so far.

Next Year Is Here

Cubs W hanging outside of my cubicleI just don’t even.

This is going to be filled with insightful writing such as that, because last night the Cubs won the World Series and my brain is still not working. So I’m just going to dump all of the W related things here. The next coherent thought I have will be the first one I’ve ever had with the Cubs as the reigning Major League Baseball champions. EVERYTHING I DO, SEE, SAY, OR EXPERIENCE, FROM HERE ON OUT, IS THE FIRST WITH THE CUBS AS THE REIGNING MAJOR (MUTHERBLEEPIN’) LEAGUE BASEBALL (MUTHERBLEEPIN’) CHAMPIONS.

Dramatic Conclusions, or Future Days of Cubs’ Past

The question hit me on the way to work this morning: what is the single most dramatic way the Cubs’ season could end in 2016? Fans are more geared up for this year’s team than any I can remember, but far too many of us seem to expect a beginning-to-end coronation. Beware that kind of hubris; the finger of fate is fickle and it has the baseball gods on speed dial. Continue reading

Nailed It (Welcome back, Coach)

I was a bit behind the curve, but I finally read the news this morning that Sean Payton would, indeed, return to coach the Saints next season (and hopefully for many more). So I did what any self-hatingrespecting blogger would do – pat myself on the back.

Or a high five.

As I wrote the other day: Continue reading

Saints Season Retrospective, part 1

You say you want a resolution, well, you know...

You say you want a resolution, well, you know…

This is the first thing I’ve posted (heck, written) in months, but I’m just going to jump right in. This is no resolution to post more – the resolution lifestyle doesn’t jive with me – but, I don’t want the burden of “restarting” to keep me from, well, restarting. So, feet first…

This will be Part 1 of my Saints 2015 season review, which ended yesterday with a satisfying walk-off victory over the Falcons. I plan to look back at each game of the season, as well as some memorable (or not) moments, and will absolutely indulge in some healthy woulda-coulda-shoulda. But, to start off, I’m going to ask a few questions about the upcoming off-season. Continue reading
