Towson Tigers Game 12 Recap

Towson TigersFor the second straight game, Towson took an early 1-0 lead, but were unable to fend off Ohio. The Tigers rallied late, with a Dick Miller home run bringing them within one in the bottom of the ninth, but the comeback was not to be as Bobcats closer Jake Roehn shut the door for the second straight game. One bright spot was Towson sophomore Alex Parker, who allowed only one hit and struck out five in the final 2.2 innings.

Towson Tigers Game 11 Recap

Towson TigersFor four innings Gavin Weyman kept the Ohio Bobcats off the board, but they finally got to him in the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits and a sac fly. He kept the walks down, allowing two free passes, but his second hit batter of the game led off the sixth and eventually scored the final run charged to the junior right-hander. Still, for most of the game Weyman threw strikes and worked through the type of early jams that have buried Towson in other games this year. It was a start he can build on. After Weyman, Dean Stramara came on, allowing one inherited runner to score and one one of his own in the seventh, but finished strong, allowing only two baserunners the final two scoreless innings.

Towson Tigers Weekend 4 Preview and Game Info (Updated)

Towson TigersThe Tigers welcome Ohio University to the jungle for three games this weekend. The Bobcats are 6-6 on the season, splitting each of the four game series they’ve played this season. This will be a tough match-up for Towson, as Ohio ranks near the top of the Mid-American Conference in several offensive categories and boast a team ERA under three (2.98, ranked 40th nationally). Falling behind is especially ill-advised, as their bullpen is filthy; they are led by closer Jake Roehn, who hasn’t allowed a run in five appearances, with 11.81K/9 and zero walks. That said, Ohio’s starters don’t strike out a ton of guys and allow more walks than their opponents (it would be nice to see that trend continue this series), so there should be opportunities to get guys on base and score runs.

Towson Tigers Game 10 Recap

Towson TigersWhen Edwin Jackson pitched for the Cubs, I had an epiphany. It wasn’t even during a meaningful game, in fact it was near the end of spring training, after he gave up a run or two and I made the mistake of entering that hive of scum and villainy known as Twitter (follow me, @evenloserswin!). As the twittering masses rushed to their keyboards and whipped out their thumbs, gleefully howling that he the worst pitcher who had ever pitched a baseball, if not the worst person on the face of the planet for daring to cash paychecks from their favorite team, a thought crystallized.

Towson Tigers Weekend 3 Recap

Towson TigersTowson finally got some home cooking this weekend, and while the first couple of courses were a little bitter, the dessert was sweet and delicious. Friday was an ugly loss, essentially decided by two innings which should be killed with fire and erased from all of our memories, while Saturday’s game was a different kind of contest for the Tigers – a hard fought pitching duel that Albany squeaked out with two late runs. Sunday, which was a big day for yours truly, seemed like it was bringin’ on the heartbreak as well, until a late rally set the stage for a walk-off victory and jubilant celebration.

A Day at the Ballpark (And a Peek Behind the Curtain)

Towson TigersYesterday was beautiful to look at, with clear, blue skies and enough bright sun to warm your skin – so long as the wind did not blow. But blow it did, pretty much all day, the swirling remnants of a nor’easter that spent the weekend felling trees and waylaying the east coast’s power grid. It was a hand numbing wind that carried a chill several layers deep; I felt fortunate to find a long-sleeve shirt in my back seat, adding another layer to the t-shirt and light jacket I wore to Schuerholz Park. I was there to watch my first Towson Tigers baseball game and to meet head coach Matt Tyner.

Tigers Walk It Off!

Towson TigersI will have much, much more on today’s Towson Tigers game versus University of Albany that I attended in person. But, I wanted to make sure I shared this tonight.

Towson rode into this game on a six game losing streak and, after falling behind 6-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, it looked like unlucky number seven would extend the streak. The Tigers bats woke up in that sixth inning and they would score four runs to pull within one, then another in the seventh to tie the game. Albany would take the lead in the top of the eight – the Great Danes scored in every other inning – before Towson again tied the game, showing, frankly, as much grit as I am right now by not making any “Eye of the Tiger” puns. That set the stage for Bo Plagge in the bottom of the ninth.

There are few better ways to win a game.

Opportunities and A Weekend Series

Towson TigersOpportunity comes in many forms, but you can find it anywhere. It can be obvious, an offer of employment, adventure, or love. It can come disguised as failure. It can be trite and cliche or literally life changing. There are endless sayings on the subject, but if there is one commonality that binds all opportunities together, it is this: you better grab that sucker with all your might, because there’s no guarantee another one will come along.

Towson Tigers Weekend 2 Recap

Towson TigersIn the vast world of sports clichés, one of the most tried and true maxims is that “the hardest thing in sports is to hit a baseball.” And that may be true in the majors, where every hurler not named Kyle Hendricks throws 90+ mph darts and “wildness” means missing by a matter of inches. However, it has long been my suspicion that, at lower levels, pitching a baseball is just as difficult. From 60 feet away you are expected to throw at a target with dimensions that change with every batter (and umpire), and aim not just at the middle of the target, but at specific corners. You’re supposed to do this while standing on a small hill, contorting your body in such a way as to make an already unnatural throwing motion borderline absurd. Meanwhile, there is a guy standing next to that target with a heavy stick, hell bent on smashing the ball you just threw with all of his weight and fury (and heaven help you if that ball returns the way it came). Yeah, pitching is hard. How else do you explain the fact that I finished my high school baseball career with a .000 batting average and a .370 OBP?
