The Rubber Game, or 2 out of 3 Ain’t Bad

UPDATE:

Dang, I’m getting pretty good at this, but the Cubs starting pitchers are doing even better. Travis Wood got through six innings of shutout ball with 85 pitches and probably would have been out for the seventh if the weather was 20 degrees warmer. Only 2BB (one to the pitcher – yuck) and 4K’s (two of the absolutely fantastic Andrew McCutchen). Continue reading

Hoo-ray, It’s (the real) Opening Day!

UPDATE:

Well, the Shark surpassed my wildest imagination, going 8 man-sized innings and spitting the image of a “true No.1.” Castro was on point and Rizzo not far behind, with Wellington throwing his name into the core player discussion. #HeresTheBeef indeed… Continue reading

Filament Friday (Revisited)

So, it’s been about 20 months since my last post, what?? This will be quick and dirty(just how you like it), but I told myself I was going to post something today, darn it…

  • I’ve been on the Edwin Jackson to the Cubs bandwagon for over a year, just forgot to tell you about it. But what do I know, better to see what the experts think.
  • As of 4:33pm eastern time the world is still here.
  • It’s been a week of healing and crappy arguments, in the interest of laughter being the best medicine here are a couple of thoughts on the gun control debate: http://i.imgur.com/1Vhil.jpg and http://i.imgur.com/UAR6X.jpg. As always, the truth is probably somewhere in between…
  • I am sure there are a bunch of lists to be found on the internet this time of year, here is one about music.

OK, that’s it for today. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and please, just be nice to each other.

Filament Friday

Friday already?!  Such a slow week for sports, I have to say the Superbowl is much less interesting without the Saints (not that I won’t be watching on Sunday).  Counting down the days to spring training and wondering if the Wizards will ever win on the road.  In other words, links are sparse… Continue reading

Glory Days, or How Freaking Out Can Be a Good Thing

My sister saw her first NBA game last night and watched the Hornets send the Wizards to an 0-25 road record (I correctly assured her she would see a victory by her home team).  She was able to verify in person that Jimmy Wall is blazing fast, so I guess that’s a good thing.  I was unable to watch the game, instead following it online, but noticed once again that the Wizards jumped out to an early, unsustainable lead.   Continue reading

Filament Friday

I REALLY intend to post more than once or twice a week, but the day job has been digging it’s hooks into me this week.  I had a whole angle on “State of the Teams” that I hoped to finish Wednesday, but at this late date it is just a big outline.  I’ll still post it, but might have to change the title so it doesn’t seem so dated.  But enough of my self-pity, I did take enough time to at least round up some links (all for your reading pleasure, of course). Continue reading

A Google video search for “john fourcade nfl highlights” returns no results…ouch.  Instead I give you Heath Shuler to Randal “Thrill” Hill for an 89 yard touchdown – from a pure probability standpoint that has to be the most unlikely play in Saints history.

Somewhere a falling whale wondered if ground would be its friend.  On to the links… Continue reading

On Lower Life Forms and the Cubs

I was perusing the Tuesday chat by Chicago baseball blogger Bruce Levine over at espn.com (WARNING: I think you need an Insider account to view the chat archives) and one question in particular irked me.

Tim (Portland, OR)

Bruce, I see people in Cub hats even out here in Oregon. My question is: why do people want to associated themselves with a losing organization? My only answer is that they are losers themselves, a lower life form. Do you agree?

My immediate reaction was a predictable, “ass hat”.  However, as I grumbled and groused through the rest of the chat a little lightbulb came on for me – are the Cubs really a losing organization? Continue reading

Filament Friday

Get it? Filament as in web?!  What do you mean I’m not that clever?  Anyway, I figure I’ll post a round-up of links on Fridays.  I’ll make sure there’s at least one each for Cubs, Saints and Wizards, then some other stuff I find just fascinating.  Continue reading

Whatever It Was, It Must Have Been Bad

I’m basically a pretty nice guy, but in past lives (if you believe in that sort of thing) I must have been a real bastard.  How else do you explain growing up with the New Orleans Saints and the Chicago Cubs as your two favorite teams,?  And for good measure, ending up just outside of Washington, DC and, for no explicable reason, finding myself a Washington Bullets Wizards fan.

Actually, there is an explicable reason for the Wizards thing, and that reason is Michael Jordan.  Already a Cubs fan, I started following Jordan and the Chicago Bulls during his rookie year and, until Tracy Porter made me fall out of my chair one night in February 2010, that was my only brush with rooting for a championship team.  So when he came to DC and announced he was returning to the court I figured, what the heck, I’ll see what these Wizards are all about.  Much to my chagrin I found out, but it was too late.  My DNA must predispose me to loving losers.
