My daughter is learning to crawl (though, honestly, she seems to prefer standing and some assisted walking), but, in these early stages, she’s more likely to scoot backwards than forwards. Which makes me think, sometimes progress isn’t obvious. Sure, there’s the whole “two steps foward, one step back” thing, but sometimes the step back is the progress. And sometimes one needs to take a step back just to see that. Focus on the big picture, don’t sweat the nitpickers, and you’ll find yourself a lot happier. And, eventually, you’ll find yourself moving in the right direction…

It’s the Laundry

I got this link in my inbox this morning, inviting me to meet Jeff Samardzija. And it got me thinking, as much as I really (really, really, really) try hard to stay as positive as possible with my teams, I don’t like Jeff Samardzija.

I don’t think he’s a bad guy and I don’t mind rooting for him, but something about him just bugs me. Maybe it’s the hair. Well, not maybe, that’s absolutely part of it. It’s pretty bad, though that could also be personal jealousy. But, more than that, it’s the disconnect between what he seems to expect from others and how he perceives himself.  Continue reading

Today, at the day job, they moved our offices from the concourse (i.e., “basement”) to the 2nd floor and the presence of natural sunlight has made me giddy. Consumed as I am with thoughts of new beginnings, I’d like to remind all fans of crappy teams that every new season is a new beginning and has little, if any, connection to the last one. Likewise, any major shift in management or ownership severs any connection to the previous regime(s). Think of a season as sports reincarnation, just churning the cycles over and over until one breaks through and reaches Nirvana (i.e., “championship”). Patience, people…

Not Just a Bully…

I heard Mark Schlereth on the radio the other day talking about Richie Incognito and he opined that a winning team with strong leadership (I think he used Peyton Manning as an example) wouldn’t have tolerated Incognito’s behavior – those teams are all about winning and nothing Incognito did contributed to that goal. So, I thought I’d look up the records of Richie Incognito’s various NFL teams.

Love is in the air and for a lot of people being a fan of a team is like being in a relationship. So, I ask you to consider these words of advice: if you’re in a relationship and you constantly criticize, belittle and berate your significant other, acting like nothing they do is ever good enough, you’re not a passionate partner, you’re an asshole. If you really feel so strongly that you are not getting what you need from the relationship, just go away. Both of you will be happier for it. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Wizards Are Winners, My How The Time Does Fly

Hey, it's a start.

Hey, it’s a start.

Congrats to the Washington Wizards for finally slaying the .500saurus Rex by beating the Portland Trailblazers last night. The last time the Wizards had a winning record was Halloween 2009, three games into the ’09-10 season. John Wall wasn’t even on the team yet, so at long last he, and the red, white and blue jerseys, can say that they’re winners. To give some perspective, here are some things that have happened in the 1,556 days since our NBA team had more wins than losses. Feel free to add anything I missed. Continue reading

His office chair slowly rocks back and forth as he folds his arms over his head and stares at the ceiling.  Frustrated, he blows his breath up and over his forehead, blowing the bangs that haven’t been found there for over a decade.

What to write, what to write…

Ideas swirl and burst into tiny drops of lost inspiration and myriad topics ram into each other as his brain tries to grab something relevant, like a claw machine trying to grab a competent Russian driver.

Ugh. That was just awful…

Suddenly a light comes on, reminding him of his father’s cruel attempts to wake him in the morning to prepare for school, flipping the switch up and down, commands to arise bellowing from his lungs. He remembers words of wisdom he saw once, written by brilliant clowns of literary mirth.

Nobody reads the intros anyway…

So, a while back I tweeted this:

And then, yesterday this happened:

If Otto Porter ever gets on Sportscenter and they call him Slenderman, you will know where it came from. And if that happens, young Mr. Porter and I will be forever…linked!
