Towson will take on the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth University today, with the first pitch at Schuerholz Park scheduled for 2 P.M. (weather permitting). The Tigers are seeking their third straight win before returning to conference play this weekend at William & Mary.
VCU is a large, well-respected research university located in Richmond, which is kind of funny because due to it’s charming name I had always assumed it was a quaint liberal arts college nestled in some hills somewhere. You learn something new every day. VCU has so many supposedly famous alumni there is an separate wikipedia page devoted to them, but I have to say I wasn’t too impressed. Most of GWAR went there , which is cool, but also the founder of 4Chan. If you need a reason to root against them, there you go.
The Rams baseball team plays in the Atlantic 10 conference and is 18-10 this season. They previously won 14 straight before dropping their last two, so maybe Towson is catching them on a downswing. Their best player is probably starting pitcher Connor Gillispie, not to be confused with out-of-work third baseman Conor Gillaspie. In any case, Towson isn’t likely to see either of them today. On offense, beware of Haiden Lamb, who is hitting over .300 and has stolen 14 bases in 17 attempts.
Lineup
Bo Plagge starts today, his second of the season. He was the winning pitcher Saturday (I hope he bought Richie Palacios dinner. Wait, these guys are in college. I hope he bought Richie Palacios, like, a protein bar or something) and will look to build on that scoreless, walk-free performance. On offense, the lineup is pretty standard. Noah Cabrera starts his seventh straight game, Andrew Cassard is once again the DH, and Tristan Howerton gets the call behind the plate.
- Billy Lennox, LF
- Richie Palacios, SS
- Mark Grunberg, CF
- Colin Gimblet, RF
- Noah Cabrera, 3B
- Andrew Cassard, DH
- Logan Burke, 1B
- Tristan Howerton, C
- Dirk Masters, 2B
SP– Bo Plagge, RHP
It looks like Towson will face Sam Ryan, a 6′ 3″ sophomore. Ryan has been effective this year, with a 2.70 ERA in eight appearances. Six of those have been starts, though he has not pitched more than four innings in any game this year. He throws in the upper-80’s (at least – that report was from when he signed with VCU last year), so it will be a good test for the Tigers hitters.
The game will be streaming online here.
