Towson has not won many games this season, but they certainly do make them memorable.
Down 3-0 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, facing Chris Weiss (Hofstra’s closer and one of the best strikeout pitches in college baseball at 16.30 K/9), the Tigers rallied for five runs, walking it off when Richie Palacios blasted a two-out grand slam over the right field fence.
You can get the full recap, including the tense moments as Billy Lennox and Palacios both fell behind 0-2 against Weiss, on Towson’s website, including video of the thrilling conclusion.
Positive Pixels
- Perhaps the biggest at bat outside of the game winner was by Billy Lennox, who fell behind 0-2 only to draw a walk that brought Palacios to the plate. It was only his fifth walk of the season, all of which have come in the past two weeks.
- Colin Gimblet’s 10 game hitting streak was snapped, but he walked once and now has been on base in 12 straight.
- Towson only struck out three times as a team.
The Watch List
Richie Palacios, SS – 1-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI. Palacios made his first home run since February 24 count about as much as a home run can. It was his first hit of the series.
Andrew Cassard, OF – 2-4, 1 R. Cassard was the DH and had a good game, notching a couple of hits and, more importantly, not striking out.
Dirk Masters, 2B – 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI. Masters drove in the first run in the ninth inning and has a hit in both games of the series.
Bo Plagge, P – 1.0 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K. Plagge got the win, his first of the season, pitching the top of the ninth and only allowing a hit.
David Marriggi, P – 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 3 BB, 7 K. David Marriggi was outstanding again. The lefty completed seven innings, striking out seven, and lowering his season ERA to 3.89. If you’re into pitcher wins, Marriggi would be your hard-luck starter at only 1-3, but he has given Towson a chance to win nearly every time out.
