The first thing my wife said to me when I woke up this morning was, “Why didn’t you start writing about UMBC basketball?!” Congratulations to the Retrievers on their historic win last night, the first time a #16 seed has beaten a #1 in the NCAA Men’s Tournament.
I may very well have written something about it, if it had been on my radar. Ever since things like jobs and kids and second jobs and sure, let’s have another kid, have become the more important parts of my life, things like college basketball have fallen by the wayside. These days I generally have no idea who the best teams in that world are, much less the 16 seeds, even when they’re right down the road from me. But huge underdogs coming out on top are sort of my thing, as you might have noticed from the name of this website. So let the UMBC Retrievers serve as an example and inspiration to us all. Miracles can happen. Underdogs can prevail. Even losers can win.
So, anyway, Towson lost to Marist yesterday…
Positive Pixels
- Gavin Weyman was outstanding yesterday in his best start since coming to Towson. The junior right-hander pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs. He struck out eight and only walked one. It was a very impressive performance and hopefully a glimpse of more to come.
- Matt Watters, younger brother of Tigers first baseman Charlie, showed some fortitude on the mound. After loading the bases on two walks and an error in the ninth, Watters got out of the inning with a double play and a strikeout. Though he works around a lot of walks and wild pitches, the sophomore has only allowed runs in one game this year and has a 3.18 ERA.
- Mark Grunberg extended his hitting streak to six and has doubles in three straight games. Today he was 1-3 with a walk and a run scored.
The Watch List
Andrew Cassard, OF – 0-4. Cassard’s on-base streak came to an end as Towson’s offense just couldn’t get on track.
Richie Palacios, SS – 1-4. Palacios extended his hit streak to five.
Dirk Masters, 2B – DNP
Bo Plagge, DH – 0-3, 1 BB. Did I mention that Towson’s offense couldn’t get on track in this game?
David Marriggi, P – DNP
Up Next

With today being my favorite holiday and tomorrow being my birthday, I can’t guarantee how much I will be able to write this weekend. I’ll do my best. I am planning on going to the series finale tomorrow, so I will have new photos and video next week.
Have a safe and fun, St. Patrick’s Day!
