Mirroring last weekend, the Tigers got off to a slow start in the opening game of their series, eventually falling to Richomond 11-5. Towson hitters struck out 13 times, while their compatriots on the mound only K’d 2 Richmond batters. It’s a trend that will need to change for Towson to find some consistent success, but I’m not sure it’s entirely unexpected. With an new coaching staff and a number of new and young players, a period of adjustment is natural. Hopefully the learning curve is as short as their memories and they can set up a rubber game in the series finale tomorrow. Here’s some quick notes and thoughts before I go attempt a 10 mile run (what the what?!).
Watch List
Richie Palacios, SS – The star shortstop reached base four times, three on hits and once on an error. He ended the day 3-5 with a double, 1 batted in, and 2 runs scored. He did commit his first error of the season, but continues to play at a very high level.
Andrew Cassard, LF – Cassard had a rough day, going 0-3 while striking out twice. Better days are ahead.
Bo Plagge, OF/P – The two-way player pitched 2 innings of relief, recording the Tigers’ pitching staff’s only two strikeouts. He also managed 3 groundouts to only one in the air, but it was an otherwise forgettable outing.
Random Musings
- Gavin Weyman had a rough debut, allowing a single run in each of the first two innings, before the wheels came completely off in the third. This year is a step up in competition for the right-hander and today it showed.
- Colin Gimblet had a nice game for Towson. The senior outfielder went 2-4 with a walk, driving in 1 run and scoring another.
- Tigers hitters did manage to walk 6 times, while Richmond only worked 2 free passes. It’s a little early to theorize, but it seems like Towson might be seeing a lot of pitches at the plate, resulting in both walks and strikeouts, while the pitchers might be a little too over the plate. Again, this is an early season period of adjustment for the players and coaches.
- Today’s match-up is at noon (eastern). The game has streaming video online, but you have to pay for it. I would love to find streaming audio, but no luck so far. If anyone knows anything I don’t feel free to ping me on Twitter. You should also follow Towson baseball, as they are good at posting in-game photos and updates of the action.
